In Acts 16, Paul sets out again on his missionary journey but without Barnabas, Instead he is accompanied by Silas and Timothy, and in part by a group of companions referred to by Luke in the 1st person. His itinerary follows the leading given by successive divine interventions designed to move him westwards, towards Rome. Most of the action takes place in Philippi, his first stopping place after leaving Asia where he had worked previously. On his arrival there, Paul first seeks out the Jewish community. However, a conflictual encounter with local people leads to his imprisonment, when the jailor provides him with the opportunity to speak about the gospel to Gentiles. Paul’s failure to make the most of this opportunity occasions implicit ciriticism from the narrator of Codex Bezae.

B03 reads the aorist of ἀγαλλιάομαι, whereas D05 reads the imper-
fect.
πανοικεῖ B P74 אrell || σὺν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ D (cum tota domu sua d).
The adverb of B03 is not found elsewhere in the New Testament, nor
in the LXX. The expression of D05 is equivalent, and by its wording main-
tains the insistence on the whole household of the jailor.
(πεπιστευκὼς) τῷ θεῷ B P74 אrell | ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν D || τ. κυρίῳ 88. 915.

The preposition ἐπί in D05 makes it clear that the jailor has acquired
faith in God, an important step for a Gentile seen from a Jewish point of
view. Without the preposition, the dative τῷ θεῷ may mean the same thing
but the point is not made so forcefully. The reading of d5 also has the ef-
fect of removing the force of the message underlying the wording of D05.

idipsud in foro et rememorati sunt terraemotum qui factus est timuerunt

B03 may have shortened the sentence by homoioteleuton (ἀπέστειλαν
B03, at the beginning of the phrase // ἀπέστειλαν D05, at the end). With-
out it, the narrative lacks coherence, since no reason is suggested for the
magistrates deciding to release their prisoners.
(τοὺς ῥαβδούχους) λέγοντες B P74 אrell || -τας D, dicentes d.
According to B03, it is the words of the magistrates, οἱ στρατηγοί,
that are reported, whereas in D05 it is those of the sergeants, τοὺς
ῥαβδούχους (an identical variant is seen at Lk. 24:34). By the same vari-
ant, the addressee of the words spoken changes: in B03, the magistrates
order the sergeants to release the men; in D05, the sergeants tell the jailor
to release them.
(ἐκείνους) οὓς ἐχθὲς παρέλαβες D, quos externa die suscepisti d 383. 614.

In B03, the demonstrative ἐκείνους, without any further qualification,
can be read as denigrating. Not so in D05 where a descriptive clause
complements the preposition.
