This article resolves the semantic, syntactic, and lexical requirements for the grammatical use of the twenty-nine New Testament verbs that designate communication without a necessary reference to speaking. The discussion establishes criteria for distinguishing verbal usages, identifies four basic usages of non-spoken communication, and examines the conditions for the permissible omission of required complements. The presentation of the licensing properties of verbs with the four basic usages clarifies the similarities and dissimilarities in the realizations of complements for verbs of non-spoken and spoken communication and illustrates two further usages that are restricted to verbs of non-spoken communication. The concluding discussion considers patterns in the distribution of complements and usages among verbs of non-spoken communication.

Usage ATE (Agent Topic Experiencer) Usage ATE differs from Usage ACE only in the semantic function of the second argument, and three of the four verbs with Usage ATE also appear with Usage ACE. The most frequent realization of the Topic is the περί (about) prepositional phrase with a genitive object (P/περί [+gen]), which occurs with the N+dat and DNC Experiencer with three verbs (8):16 περὶ μὲν γὰρ τῆς διακονίας τῆς εἰς τοὺς ἁγίους περισσόν μοί ἐστιν τὸ γράφειν ὑμῖν (2 Cor 9,1) There is nothing else for me to write to you about the service for the holy ones. ἐλάλει περὶ αὐτοῦ πᾶσιν τοῖς προσδεχομένοις λύτρωσιν 'Ιερουσαλήμ (Luke 2,38) She was speaking about him to all those awaiting the redemption of Je- rusalem. The N+acc Topic occurs with the DNC Experiencer with one verb (1): 16 AT/E, P/περί [+gen]/N+dat: γράφω (5), Acts 25,26a; 2 Cor 9,1; 1 Thess 4,9; 5,1; Jude 3a; P/περί [+gen]/DNC: γνωρίζω (1), Luke 2,17; γράφω (1), John 5,46; ἐμφανίζω (1), Acts 25,15.
